You should apply as early as possible- ideally in the spring before your school year starts, to ensure your funding is ready on time. However, you can still apply after classes begin, as long as you meet OSAP’s deadline (typically 60 days before the end of your study period). Applying late may delay your funding, so it’s always better to apply early, even if you’re unsure about your eligibility.
If you’re considered a dependent student, OSAP uses your parents’ income to determine how much support you may need. This is based on the assumption that parents contribute to their child’s education. However, there are exceptions. If you have limited or no contact with your parents, or if your situation is complex (such as family breakdown), you may be eligible for a review that allows OSAP to assess you independently.
OSAP funding is made up of two parts: grants and loans.
Grants are money you do not have to repay.
Loans must be repaid after you finish school, with interest applied after a grace period.
When you apply, OSAP automatically assesses your eligibility for both. You can choose to accept just the grant portion if you don’t want to take on debt.
Most students who are Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or protected persons studying at an approved school can qualify for OSAP. Eligibility depends on several factors, including your course load, income (and your parents’ income if you’re considered a dependent student), and your residency in Ontario. Even if you think your family income is “too high,” you may still qualify for grants or loans. The only way to know for sure is to apply.
OSAP recognizes that not all students have straightforward situations. If you’re dealing with things like a recent change in family income, disability-related expenses, or family breakdown, you may qualify for a review or appeal. These processes allow your funding to be reassessed based on your actual circumstances. Providing clear documentation is key, and getting guidance can make a big difference in the outcome.
